Tailored with Intention: The Ultimate Classic Archetype Guide to 35+ Brands
As a personal stylist for women based in Seattle, one of my very favorite parts of the job is helping each client channel her authentic personal style. I don’t dress her like everyone else. I don’t dress her like me.
We create a curated collection of pieces that flatter her frame, are in her color palette, are functional for her lifestyle and fit into her budget. And every one is authentic to HER style.
Since we kicked off this business in 2013, we’ve included online shopping lists (AKA Wishlists and Uber Wishlists) as an integral part of the shopping process. As we emerged from COVID, it was clear that those would become the bread and butter of the shopping experience as local shopping options became more limited and online choices continued to expand.
While each Poplin client has different style key words, most are seeking pieces that feel unique to her and are likely to be conversation starters with others. After all, clothes can create connection, and other reason I adore style.
There’s an endless number of ways to express your style and I’m a big fan of inclusivity. So we developed five style archetypes several years ago to simplify the process for members of the Poplin Community (that means you!). One of your style key words might be punk rock, steampunk or fierce. In the land of Poplin archetypes, those fall under, “Edgy,” meaning that when you are a client, we dive deeper into the specifics of punk rock. But when you are a newsletter subscriber or a client who just wants some fresh inspiration and resources, having the “Edgy choices” really helps.
Those five archetypes are: Edgy, Classic, Boho, Effortless and Creative.
Each one has a Poplin Pinterest Board and we’ve spent over a decade curating lists of recommended retailers based on those keywords and share exclusively with Poplin clients as resources. Earlier this spring, we shared our list of recommended retailers for Creative Style for the very first time. It has been wildly popular and I knew immediately that I’d need to do something similar for women with a Classic Style. And now, here it is!
In my mind, there are a few subsets to Classic pieces, so I’ve divided the brands and retailers up accordingly. They are: Elevated Ivy (aka preppie), French Girl Contemporary (more feminine French-inspired including French brands, of course), Sharp-Masculine Tailored (to highlight suits, trousers, button downs, etc.), Architectural Minimalists (a slight crossover with Creative style, these minimalist classics are more hard than soft), Effortless Casual Classics (think Vince and the like) and finally Foundations and High-End Curators (to encompass those luxurious, well-made pieces that you want to own for a lifetime.)
If this resonates, I’m with you. Finding these pieces online is brutal and finding in person boutiques not only catering to your style, but in your city or town, can be equally challenging.
And so- I created this list.
I hope it helps you find pieces that bring you joy and feel like YOU. As per usual, we use affiliate links (when possible). Many smaller brands or labels don’t offer affiliate links and we include them anyway. But please know that if there is an affiliate link, we’d appreciate you using it when you are ready to purchase. After all, those add up and there is no extra cost to you. If an affliate link isn’t used, the price is the same but the brand or retailer keeps that income rather than sharing with someone (like us) recommending it.
Another important bit of info- we are complex beings and this is especially true when it comes to style. You can be Classic and Creative, for instance. Leaning more into one style than the other depending on the situation. Of course, retailers and brands offer pieces that fit into more that one aesthetic, so this is a general resource to get you started. Even if Classic doesn’t feel like one of your style words, it’s worth taking a look at the list for fresh inspiration.
Okay! Ready to dive into this list? One last thing- Check out the Poplin Style Classic Pinterest Board for new additions over time from these retailers and more.
