It's Time for a Little Intarsia.
As a personal stylist, I'm always on the lookout for the next wave. I have a feeling that once I plant this seed in your brain, you'll start to see this everywhere. So, here we go: get ready for intarsia.
Intarsia
Um, what? Let's let Wikipedia give us the low down: Intarsia is a knitting technique used to create patterns with multiple colors. As with the woodworking technique of the same name, fields of different colors and materials appear to be inlaid in one another, fit together like a jigsaw puzzle. It's all over the runways and you're sure to start seeing it, once you know you are looking. Here are a few of my favorite examples. Expect some graphic and unexpected prints, lots of animal references and the like. Right now, we're seeing it either in designer-land or in apparel for kids. Yes, I appreciate the humor in that. But, keep your eyes peeled for intarsia to move to a more affordable price point. You might also notice that I'm featuring sweaters when the new spring collections are finally in stores. Yes, ma'am. That's because, let's face it, we still need some layering pieces and it's nice to pick these babies up while they are on the sale rack rather than waiting for full price options come fall.
Remember, your personal style comes first. So, if this fits into your unexpected, risk-taker style- go for it. If you aren't as experimental, tread a bit more carefully. Balance it out with something modern, tailored and either preppie (hello blazer) or edgy (hi there, leather jacket). As always, let me know how it goes!
Happy intarsia-spotting! And, if you aren't already on the Poplin email list, there's no time like the present. New subscribers will receive a six part series of my Style Extras. This just kicked off today and I'm really appreciating all the positive feedback. Don't miss out!
