What is a Catsuit and When (Why and How) Would You Wear One?

As a personal stylist for women, I’m all over researching trends for each season. it’s true. I guide each client to choose pieces that are authentic to her personal style, flatter her frame and are functional for her lifestyle. But, it’s also important the style feel current, so adding in a few pieces each year (or season) is a great way to do that. The key is to select items that are just right for you rather than pieces that will just camp out in your closet with tags on.

One of this year’s breakout items is the catsuit. And while I can hear you gasping and wondering why I’m even bringing this up, I can tell you that for some women there are times and places that this beauty is just the thing. Let’s see if that means you.

What is a catsuit?

Think of a catsuit as leggings for your entire body. A catsuit is fitted all over and tends to cover the majority of your body. Kim Kardashian is really the queen of the catsuit and Skims is the ideal place to look for one.

Why Would you Wear a Catsuit?

Did you notice me mention leggings? That’s why. A catsuit keeps you cozy while showing your shape. It’s effortless to throw on, but it is decidedly not effortless when you head the restroom, so plan for that, especially if you are layering.

If you’ve got that covered, a catsuit can be pretty awesome when you are working from home. Just toss on your top layer when you are heading out into the world and enjoy feeling super comfortable when you are inside.

How Do You Style a Catsuit?

Personally, I’m into using a Catsuit as a base layer. That’s how Grace Kelly did it in, “To Catch a Thief,” and let’s face it, she’s never wrong. In that case, you see the catsuit as a component of the outfit. Alternatively, you can opt for a “nude” catsuit to layer underneath sheer pants or a sheer dress to avoid a see through outfit or obvious undergarments.

Poplin client, Caitlyn, is wearing a sheer dress over a fitted tank and biker shorts of the same color. In this instance, she could have been wearing a catsuit instead.

When I think of catsuits, the first woman that comes to mind is my fearless client, Lauren. She had one in her closet when we did her edit and I really wish we had a photo to showcase her awesomeness in it. She also used it as a base layer. Here’s a shot of her fearless, costume-y, steampunk style to give you a sense of her vibe. In this image, she has leggings on underneath a sheer skirt. A catsuit could be used in a similar way. Lauren’s a CEO, which feels relevant right now. She’s also a super bad ass that had her photo shoot in the middle of a torrential rainstorm.
