What Can I Wear Besides a Traditional Puffer Jacket?

As a personal stylist for women based in Seattle, I see fleece jackets and puffer jackets in nearly every client closet. Most of the time, we have a hilarious conversation about why she needs one or several of these and in many cases, I agree. But, this isn’t without caveats.
First, you dress for yourself above all else and you are the same person whether you are at work or at play. This means, that it’s as important that you feel good about how you look when you run into the neighbors while walking your dog as when you step into the office. Of course, the attire is not the same, although here in the Pacific Northwest, it often is. The goal for each situation is to feel comfortable, powerful and like your authentic self in all situations. Your clothes are just the leverage you need to achieve that.
In general, I’m an advocate for your main coat not being a puffer or fleece. Ideally, it’s a wool blend, leather or some other option that makes you feel elevated without sacrificing functionality, and communicates to the world that you are here to be seen.
But let’s face it, puffers are useful. So, if you are ready to pick up a new one, let’s make it cool, shall we?

Unexpected puffers
Not every puffer needs to fit the mold. Bomber Puffers
Yes! I’ve noticed that several of these puffers are bombers. So, that’s a solid indication that bombers are all the rage right now. I’m all for them as long as they flatter your frame and are authentic to your personal style. (Also, it’s easy to end up giving a nod to white supremacy with bombers if you take the look all the way, so be cognizant of the jacket, the pairing and the rest of your styling. Again, unlikely, but possible. While we’re on the subject, one of my all time favorite boots, Doc Marten’s and combat boots in general also continue to be on trend. If you are love those, as I do, it’s helpful to be aware of the significance of different lace colors which have had very real meanings, including support for white supremacy, for as long as I can remember.)

Shearling puffers
Here’s another big trend for fall and winter 2022, shearling puffers. That’s right. We’ve got shearling jackets. And we have puffers and now we have a hybrid of the two. These often have more of an Americana vibe or slightly boho, depending on styling. Keep in mind your plan for keeping them clean if the shearling is on the outside of the jacket and is a light color.

Subtle but not boring colors
I often hear from clients phrases like, “feminine but not girly,” when describing their aspirational style. Subtle, luxurious feeling colors can communicate this vibe. Here are two lovely examples. Remember that when you stick with your color palette, everything will work with everything else, so these colors will also be practical. Intentional shopping makes a big difference and saves you cash. Also, blue and rose are two unexpected neutrals. You don’t always need a brown, black, grey or white option to work seamlessly with your existing collection.

Puffer Vest
Sometimes, a vest is the answer. If that’s the case, it doesn’t need to be the traditional puffer vest. Mix it up with silhouettes that flatter your frame and make you feel beautiful and cozy simultaneously.
