As a personal stylist for women, I’ve been curating shopping lists from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale since day one- over 13 Anniversary Sales ago. I’m excited to report that this year’s collection is better than we’ve seen in several years. Of course, there’s a wide array of basics, a jam packed selection of denim and then, as per usual, some major themes. When it comes to tops, you’ll find a balance of classic choices, super feminine looks and a smaller portion of edgy and boho items.
Each year I organize my picks in different ways, with a goal to make the sale as shoppable as possible for you, Dear Reader. After all, the women’s portion of Anniversary has over 18,000 items. This year, rather than organize by style or body type, I’m listing my favorite pieces by item type. I’ll highlight my top three or so on each post and then give you my overall favs- typically you can expect about 50 items per post. My Top 5 Favorite Dresses From Nordstrom’s Anniversary Sale
2. The brown polka dots will always say, “Pretty Woman” and this drop waist choice with pockets is everything.
3. Staud’s version of this dress is an iconic choice that flatters so many body types and in this season’s winner, chocolate brown?! Yes, please.
4. It’s like a collab between Napolean’s stylist and the fit and flare committee. Expect this to be flattering on most women- if, in fact, it aligns with her style.
5. Want to minimize your stomach and still show some skin? Done and done.
6. I can’t get enough of this taffeta piece that is unique and comfortable.
Waistlines everywhere but… your waist
Whether you are opting for the fresh Basque waistline (the V-shaped dropped waist style seen below on the green dress) or an empire waist (as in the yellow dress), extreme waistlines are all over the Anniversary Sale. These are especially useful if you are short or long waisted as moving your waistline allows you to give the impression that your legs are longer or shorter than they are. Not short or long waisted- well, you still get that power thanks to these dresses.

Alternatively, how about a dress without a waist at all?
Shapeless shifts are especially flattering on Triangle or Diamond shaped figures. If you are short or long waisted, regardless of your body type, a dress without a clearly defined waist is an easy way to trick the eye into believing that your waist is wherever we expect it to be. So, it’s a delightful hack. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t love a shapeless choice after a big meal or for an extra relaxed vibe?

Military Inspired pieces that are far from Camo
Earlier this month, we went to the Dome (Napolean’s Tomb) . While touring the museum, I was struck by how much the uniforms resembled my recent purchase at Zadig & Voltaire earlier int. the week. Then I thought more about my recent buys and realized how much I had gotten into military inspired items. By the looks of these dresses, I am not the only one. Shout out to gold buttons, epilets and the like.

And I’m into it. Bubble skirts are a favorite of mine, especially paired with a boxy cropped blouse. You’ll see more volume in pants, of course. As we focus on dresses, enjoy giant pieces that demand you own the space. Who says you can only wear a big dress on your wedding day? If volume appeals to you, now is your time.

Stay Straight Up and Down with a Column Dress
If you carry your weight more on the top or bottom, you likely won’t love how these fit. But, whether you are curvy or think of yourself as more straight up and down, these cuts are compelling. Specifically, women with an hourglass or rectangle body type will resonate with these.
