Guest Post: How to Care for Your Leather and Suede

You might as well bookmark this now. I’ve asked one of my favorite people, Maggie Burns, co-owner of re-souL in Ballard to give us the low down on taking care of leather and suede. I’ve had LOTS of questions from clients about this lately. Maggie is the first person I think of for such things as re-souL carries very high quality shoes and accessories made from Italian leather including the re-souL shoe line made in Italy and designed by Maggie, right here in Seattle. (Maggie also volunteers with me styling homeless youth each month at YouthCare.) strongly suggest you swing by the shop (or go online) to order leather care products that re-souL stocks. I like to pick up Otter Wax, for example, as a stocking stuffer each year. And while you are there you might as well pick up some shoes, jewelry, handbags, socks…….

5 Questions to Ask When Choosing What to Wear in Family Photos

Whether you are taking candids at home or hiring a professional photographer, trying to determine what to wear for family photos can be challenging. As a personal stylist, I get this question often. Having just taken our family photos for the year, the time is right for some tips on selecting what to wear that represents your authentic personal style and is reflective of your family right now. After all, that’s what we’re documenting for, right?

One more thing, right now, Poplin readers save when booking a photo shoot with the Happy Film Company. Take a look at my recent post with our family photos and all the details.

The Ideal Family Photos- Stylish + Affordable

We just got back the images from our family photo shoot with the Happy Film Company and they are SO good. There's a sample of our images to give you an sense of what I'm talking about. They are the perfect mix of silly, serious, grown ups, kid (there's just one). So, I asked the company owner, Chamonix Brown (also the videographer behind the Poplin video) to offer up a little something for the Poplin community. Here it is! The time to document your lovely family is now. Or, if you are up for a photo shoot that shows YOU off, reach out. I live for this stuff.

Your Super Deal

How to Look and Feel Great at the Pumpkin Patch

As a personal stylist for women, sometimes I have clients who want to save their "good stuff" for special occasions. Think of this as your good china staying in the cupboard until Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner.

That approach works for family heirlooms such as china, but how likely is it that you're going to save several of your work appropriate pieces for your daughter 20 years from now? I'm guessing not super likely.

However, it is, of course, important to take care of your nicer pieces and running around in the mud and rain is probably not your first choice for when to pull them out. And, when playing with the kids at the pumpkin patch or out trick-or-treating, it's vital that you are ready to run, jump or ride in the car. Translation: Comfort trumps all.

But, I assure you that you can still look stylish when celebrating autumn outdoors. Here's how.

Ilhan Omar Shows How to Look Great at Work Without Sacrificing Your Personal Style

Whether your workplace is incredibly conservative (suits for men and women) or equally casual (there are folks in sweats on the daily), showing up as your best and most authentic self can be a real challenge. As a personal stylist for women, I see this everyday. It’s really helpful to find women who inspire you. You can learn from them, even if your style is different.

That’s why I wrote this post taking some lessons from the Minnesota’s own Ilhan Omar. Here’s a little something from the archives that will help you figure out how to get dressed for work in a way that’s just right for YOU.

How to Dress Your Authentic Self at Work.

P.S. If you are a Washington resident (like me!) you should have received your ballot in the mail. Make sure to vote! Don’t wait. Make it happen. Want to get more involved? Take a look at Swing Left, Wall of Us, Resist-bot or any of the local campaigns for candidates and initiatives you care about. Many folks who don’t vote, skip it because: they think they aren’t informed enough about issues, they don’t know how to vote, they forget or just run out of time. The time is now. You’ve got this. And if you need a little help, consider the google or heading to a local resource that is aligned with your values for some suggestions. For example: Progressive Voters Guide, Seattle Times What You Need to Know for Election 2018, The Stranger’s Voting Guide 2018

P.P.S. In 2004, Christine Gregoire was elected Governor by a margin of 129 votes! Every vote counts, folks.

10 Absolute Game Changers

Hello Dear Reader!

First of all, I sure hope you received the Poplin newsletter in your inbox this morning. I heard from three people within 20 minutes of sending it. This tells me that I should share it with everyone. So, here you go. And, please remember to subscribe so that you’ll see all the good stuff every time.

The Essential, Elegant, Timeless Must Have for Fall

Author, coach, mom, all around bad ass and Poplin Client, Julie, is the picture of confidence in her animal print coat. It's time to get your animal print on, my friend. Whether you are going full force with texture AND print, like Julie, or you'd prefer something a little less bold, this is the season to stock up. Remember, animal print is a neutral and can be paired with virtually any color. Just choose your print carefully as it's vital that it communicates your personal style. And, remember that placement is key, too. Opt for animal prints where you want to draw the eye. If you have an Inverted Triangle shaped figure (shoulders wider than your hips) go for a skirt, pants or shoes. For a Triangle shaped body, like Julie, (shoulders narrower than your hips or thighs) opt for a top, scarf or coat. Rectangles (shoulders and hips are aligned without a defined waist), you'll want fitted options that provide shape or try a belt, scarf, shoes or details in the print. Or, an all over fitted dress. Diamond figures (shoulders and hips aligned and narrower than your middle) should try a vertical zipper or stripe down the middle, sleeves, pants, shoes or a scarf in the print. And if you have an hourglass figure (shoulders and hips aligned with a defined waist that is smaller than both), try it all over or balanced equally on the top and bottom. A belt works well, too.

Now that you know how to wear it,

It's Comfortable. It's Durable. It's Cool. And it's your Essential Fabric for Fall.

Whether you dig into the back of your drawer to pull out your collection of this fabric or head out to get a brand spankin’ new piece, it’s time for corduroy. Believe it. As a personal stylist for women, I know how much so many of you have been pining for the days when this soft fabric makes its comeback. The time is now.

The Western- Inspired Trend is Real. I Promise.

In my recent post listing 10 2018 Fall Fashion Trends, Western-Inspired fashion made the list. It also gave me a chance to plug one of my favorite bands, the Old 97's and remind me of my deep Alt Country phase. I digress.

If you liked this whole Western fashion idea and were asking for more, this is the post for you. As a personal stylist for women in the Seattle area, I live for this stuff. After all, at Poplin Style, we focus on a woman's personal style, budget and body type to create a strategy to help her look and feel her best each day. Onto Western Wear....

Fall Fashion Spotlight: Lightweight Jackets

As a personal stylist for women, I spend a great deal of my time with real women, helping each women determine her personal style. Knowing your personal style isn't enough. Clothes need to be functional for your life and realistic for your budget. And, of course, they should be flattering for your body type. This may sound tricky, but it isn't. It's all about having the proper filters to know what to wear and what to buy.

The weather is changing and that's a sure sign that it is time to make sure your collection of lightweight jackets is on point. Sure, you can keep wearing cardigans and yes, everyone needs a few. But, if you are still wearing cardigans on the daily, it's time to mix things up and elevate your overall look with a jacket. Not to worry, there are jackets that are right for everyone. Let's get you started.

This High Impact Fabric Will Transform Your Look

Most of us are drawn to specific fabrics. As a personal stylist for women, I see this all the time. Some women adore the way natural fabrics feel on their skin. Others, care more about the way a fabric looks. Does the print draw her eye? Does it look like a quality item? Whatever your feelings, one fabric feature has an impact on how flattering a piece is on your body.

It's all about whether or not the fabric is shiny.

How do I Style White Shoes?

In the very early stages of Poplin, I won a pair of shoes (of my choice!) from one of my very favorite retailers, the now defunct SoleStruck. I really wanted a pair of giant platform clogs. They were the result of a collaboration between Opening Ceremony and Chloe Sevigny. What could be better. There were two options: black leather or white patent leather. I was on the fence, but kept coming back to the white and since they were free, I decided to take the plunge. At the time, white shoes seemed like insanity. Naturally, there were few places to look for style inspiration and I found myself experimenting with them with much success. In fact, this blog post details that journey.

That experience was just the beginning of my white shoe phase. Next up, platform white Birkenstocks, white sneakers and so many others. My latest love is my white pair of Vince slides. As a personal stylist who works with real women using pieces in their existing collection or purchased using their actual budgets, it's vital that I know how to maximize pieces for my clients. White shoes and the challenges of styling them have come up often. That brings us to white shoes. They are ubiquitous, so if you don't already have a pair, you soon will. Now, let's make sure you know how to wear them so you get the most out of this hot trend. Off we go!

As a personal stylist for women in the Seattle area, I get lots of questions about style. As we move further into the styling process, I start to get lots more questions about everything else. From hair to skincare to philanthropy and summer camps for kids: You name it. I've been asked about it.

Style Essentials: The Contents of Your Summer Handbag

When it comes to handbags, I've got two kinds of clients: Those who only use one or two bags, and those who fully embrace handbags as an essential accessory. Regardless of which camp you happen to be in, the contents of your bag are critical during the summer months. After all, the sun is out and life is a bit more unexpected.

As your very own personal stylist for women, it's time I give you the low down on your summer handbag essentials. Oh, and since it's Amazon Prime Day, I figured you are already spending the day on the site. So, this post is more Amazon heavy. Enjoy!

Florals: Which Ones Are Right for You?

If you aren't on the Poplin email list, you are missing out. This week's edition was all about florals. Here's a sneak peak.

Must Have: Pant Suits.

I know. It's hard to hear the words, "pant suit," and not think of Hillary Clinton. But, that's not why we're here. We're here to talk about the resurgence of the matching jacket and pants, AKA pant suit, that's about to take over. As a personal stylist for women, I know that this seems well outside of what Seattle-ites are wearing to work. And, this can sound awfully stuffy and conservative. Not to worry, we can look to Cate Blanchett to show why the pant suit is something worth investing in. I was pining over which suit to show you when I discovered this article that chronicles all of the suits she wore on her Oceans 8 press tour. Magic.

Body Types: Dressing Your Body at Any Size

It's about balance, not about size. As a personal stylist for women, I find this concept comes up pretty regularly. The loudest voice we hear is our inner voice and more often than we'd like, that inner voice can actually be the voice of the inner critic.

We're all familiar with the inner critic. She has all sorts of opinions on career, parenting, keeping the house clean and so on. She also, has some very strong feelings when it comes to our bodies.

It doesn't have to be this way. Although her voice will always be the loudest, it doesn't have to be a negative one. We can reframe the conversations we have with ourselves, especially when it comes to our bodies. That's where I come in. I work with a woman to identify what she is trying to communicate the the world, then marry that with her budget, body type and lifestyle and we create a strategy for her moving forward. Each client has a password protected webpage to show her what is flattering, and what isn't which also helps simplify her life.

In truth, I worry that shorthand conversations about body types sound like criticism of someone's body. That's not how I see it. If you only know one thing about dressing for your body, here's what it you need to know:

It's not about size. It's about balance.
