I spend a fair amount of time with clients who are navigating plus size fashion for the first time. Whether it is following the birth of a new baby, other life changes or just growing older, it's common for a woman's weight to fluctuate. And, finding clothes in a new retail sphere can be daunting, to be sure. For those of you who have always been curvy, finding current, beautiful and affordable clothes has likely always been a challenge. And, there are so many retailers finally catering to your body and budget.
Recently, I met a lovely and incredibly knowledgable fashionista, Jordan. So, this Seattle Sunday, we're doing things a little differently.
It's my pleasure to introduce Jordan Richardson to you. She'll be contributing to the Poplin blog periodically with her vast knowledge on rocking your personal style regardless of your size. Love her and you will, too. Enjoy!
So nice to meet you all, my name is Jordan, but you all can call me “J”.
I am a new addition to Poplin as a contributor and I am excited to bring you a little of my own experiences and excitement about plus size fashion and clothes.
As a plus size woman, I wanted my first post to really focus in on something that is near and dear to me: well fitting and fashionable clothes in extended sizes. So my focus today is going to be on my personal favorite retailers, as well as some others out there that are doing a great job of making amazing and inspiring plus size clothing.
In my experience, it can be challenging to find beautifully cut, interesting and fashionable clothing beyond the standard size 12. So quite a few of my blog posts are going to center around fit, taking risks, and research. Not only have we recently seen a boom in plus size retailers, we have also seen traditional retailers expanding their size ranges. This is great news for all, since it is showing that the industry and retailers are realizing that there is a market eager for more options.
I appreciate a balance between fast fashion and higher end retailers. While it is important that you invest in pieces that are classic and multifunctional in your closet, it's also essential that you have pieces that make you smile when you reach for them. First and foremost, clothes should make you feel great. Regardless of trends, remember to always express who you are.
Jordan's Top Five Retailers for Plus Size Fashion
1. ASOS Curve.
A UK brand with an extensive online straight size (AKA standard sizes) and men’s range, they are my constant haunt for up to date pieces at a great price. The Curve includes sizes US 14-24. Their sizing runs a bit on the bigger side. In fact, if things are cut generously I have been able to find oversized pieces from the main range at ASOS that also work for me. Plus Free Shipping all day everyday!
Previously part of the Limited Brands, Eloquii is THE place for plus size fashion. Plus size fashion bloggers everywhere are wearing it. The quality and selection are classy fashion forward apparel for the confident woman. The size range is 14-24.
3. Simply Be.
Okay, I want you to all say it with me, “LINGERIE”! This is where I get my Curvy Kates and other beautifully made undergarments. For those of us that have trouble finding extended bra sizes. this UK retailer is the answer. Simply Be even hosts Anna Scholz lingerie each season, which is truly a treat. Another pond jumping heavy hitter, this multi faceted site offers up a truly gigantic selection of clothing and accessories. Their sizes range from 10-28.
This San Francisco native has recently invested an exceptional amount of effort to make their plus size offerings more extensive and equally importantly, fixing any fitting woes. In the last 6 months, plus size offerings extending up to a 4X and 26 have become more frequent, without skimping in the design category. This is my go-to for events. It is the perfect investment for that party frock that will have you twirling all night long, with that hint of retro flair.
5. Nordstrom & Nordstrom Rack.
As a budget conscious consumer, my stops at Nordstrom are not frequent. But when I do go, I tend to invest in pieces that are going to last me quite some time. My favorite piece is my Calson chocolate leather jacket. In contrast, I spend a great deal of time at the Rack. I love to pick up shoes at a fabulous price. Because I like my shoes to be nice, like really nice, without freaking out my account.
